You have no power

Is it outlet specific?

Some outlets are controlled by a light switch on the wall. If you noticed a switch that doesn’t seem to go to anything, it could control this outlet. Flip it on and try the outlet again.

If it’s a GFCI outlet, push the small reset button in the centre of the outlet (often labelled ‘RESET’). Then, plug in your appliance and check again for function.

Next, check the breaker panel. The breakers are generally in the ON position. If a breaker is flipped, the switch will be in the middle, between ON and OFF. To reset it, push the breaker fully to OFF. Then flip it back to the ON side. Go back and check the outlet.

Is it the whole property?

Verify with your electric company to determine if there’s been a building / property / neighbourhood power outage.

Your dishwasher isn’t draining

Was the dishwasher interrupted mid-cycle?

If that’s the case, there will naturally be standing water when you open it. Run the appliance a second time and check if a completed cycle resolves the issue.

Is there a blockage?

Inspect the bottom of the dishwasher and remove any food that may be blocking the drain. Additionally, clean the drain basket and filter (located at the bottom of the dishwasher’s interior) and rinse the debris. Remember to regular clean this part of the appliance.

*Please exercise caution as the bottom of the dishwasher can run extremely hot during/immediately after a cycle.

Your toilet isn’t flushing

Is the toilet blocked?

If the toilet is clogged, we recommend using a plunger to pump the blockage through the system. Be sure to protect the surrounding area, with old towels, to avoid water damage. Not to mention, avoid water overflow by gently turning off the water shutoff valve and reducing the number of toilet flushes.

Is the flush mechanism not working?

Remove the toilet tank cover and verify that the flapper is attached to the flush handle.

Your heating / cooling system isn’t working

Is the thermostat screen blank?

If there is no display even after pressing a few buttons, the thermostat could be out of batteries. Replace them and try again.

Is the thermostat set properly?

If you want cold air, ensure that the system is set to ‘COOL’ as you may be simply spinning the fan.

Is there any power?

Check the breaker panel. If one of the switches are tripped, it could be the one connected to your air system. Reset it and try the AC again.

Is warm air coming out when you want cold, and vice versa?

This could be a building-wide issue. For condo buildings in Toronto, it could be that the building hasn’t switched over from heating to cooling, and vice versa. If that’s an issue, refer to our A/C guide.

Your Drain Is Clogged

A plunger - will dislodge any food particles in the kitchen sink and build-up in the bathroom.

Hot Water - pouring hot water down the drain can help dissolve pipe build up.

Baking soda + vinegar - many residents swear by the more natural cleaning agent to cut through the pipe grime.
