Landlord Red Flags You Need To Watch Out For

You’re excited about a new place but there is something off about the landlord. Before you sign on the dotted line, be sure to check that your future landlord hasn’t waved any of these red flags.

#1 They’re hesitant to give you contact information

If you’re about to hand over a large sum of money, ensure that there are a few ways to reach your landlord. If something goes wrong, you want to know they are accessible.

#2 They’re evasive about important questions

If they’re avoiding answering one of your questions or providing vague answers, this may be suspicious.

#3 They underplay some major problems

If you’ve noticed plumbing or pest problems and the landlord  minimizes the issues,, this may suggest that they are hiding something significant.

#4 They poorly maintain the property

If the unit is in unacceptable conditions, it reflects the landlord’s willingness to keep property livable.

#5 They are requesting cash-only transactions

If they want first and last month’s rent, plus deposits all in cash, note that it may be a scam as there is little to no paper trail and you may be in trouble.

#6 They’re not willing to show you the apartment before you sign

If you want to see your home before you rent, that is fair. If the landlord is being evasive, there could be something wrong. Even if someone is currently living there, they could at least show you a comparable unit.

#7 They live far away with no property manager in place

If there is an emergency or you’re in need of something repaired, who you gonna call? You want to know that the issue will be addressed.

If you’ve noticed plumbing or pest problems and the landlord  minimizes the issues,, this may suggest that they are hiding something significant.
